Happy New Year Young Government Leaders!

Looking at the challenges facing federal government in 2009, it looks like we will have some work to do. Luckily, taking on tough challenges is when young government leaders really shine.

Despite all the bad news we hear in the press, there is a lot to look forward to in 2009, especially for those of us in public service. We want to hear from you about what you are looking forward to most in public service in 2009. Please respond to this blog with your comments and we will feature some of them in our next newsletter!

Fiscal realities are going to put a lot of pressure of government agencies to scale back on the services they provide. This is unfortunate, but sometimes a little pressure can drive great innovation. I think (I hope!) government agencies are going to be looking for new, creative ways to share information and deliver services. I'm looking forward to coming up with new ideas (or dusting old ones off) to help my agency deliver the best service it can.

"...that American culture derides government work and dissuades bright young people from pursuing it." From a recent NY Times article. This is what I want to change in 2009...this attitude. It IS time to make government cool.

"...our resources may be finite, but our will is infinite." From the new President-Elect. I believe technology and the fresh thinking of people like us will enable our collective will in the government to better serve the American people.

As President Obama intoned yesterday, there is much work to be done and we will do this work only together. So in that spirit I look forward to seeing government collaborate at all levels, local, state, and federal, in order to serve the people of the United States and start to rebuild the promise of tomorrow.
